Plot Summary
He arrived by ship on the blue sounding sea;
Just Beowulf and his crew, whom had no bachelor’s degree.
They were dressed in armor, but there was no guarantee;
There was a monster to kill, would he be the honoree?
He stepped off of the ship ready to see.
Asleep at night, but prepared to fight,
Grendel came bashing and crashing giving all a fright.
Sticking with his decision to fight Grendel unarmed,
Beowulf wrestled him down to the ground unharmed.
No weapon could harm him, known not to his foes,
Beowulf continued to deliver the blows.
Leaving him with one arm less to pocket,
He ripped Grendel’s arm out of its socket.
Beowulf’s prized possession in hand,
He held Grendel’s arm up with great command.
Again in mead-hall a beast attacked,
This time it was Grendel’s mother who couldn’t relax.
Frightened, she fled the scene with sons arm and a victim in hand.
Once aware of what happened Beowulf took a firm stand.
He rushed to her lair, found a magical lake,
Brave Beowulf jumped in for victories sake.
They battled all day, then she finally gave way
Beowulf took Grendel’s head as a reward for display.
Old yet still spry, Beowulf’s last battle began,
This time it was with a gold hoarding dragon.
Beowulf wrestled and stabbed, but the scales were too thick.
His men saw that he struggled, but only one came quick.
Hashing blows, Beowulf didn’t hold back.
But the dragon saw an opening and gave an attack.
He pierced Beowulf’s neck with his sharp lethal fangs;
Causing Beowulf’s body much agony and pain.
Wiglaf aided Beowulf on the final leg of the battle,
Beowulf stabbed the dragon and began to prattle.
Before death took Beowulf, Wiglaf brought him some treasure
Giving Beowulf’s heart much pleasure.
Once Beowulf had passed, his last request they honored and complied,
His funeral pyre was built up high.
His remains put in a barrow atop the sea
For all the passing ships to see; to remember,
This great hero who lived among thee.
